Census Forms

There were five different types of forms used on Census Day; the type used depending on the type of establishment. The design of these forms was the result of extensive customer consultationtests and rehearsals conducted with the participation of members of the general public.

Household Form

The household form was delivered to each household in Northern Ireland. It contained a total of 42 questions, the majority of which only required tick-box answers. Most of the questions were previously asked in the 1991 Census. The aim of the questions was to present as detailed a picture as possible of people, households and housing in Northern Ireland. The broad topics covered by the questions were:

    Household accommodation;

    Relationships within the household;

    Demographic characteristics (e.g. sex, age, marital status);

    Health/long-term illness/provision of care;

    Qualifications;

    Cultural characteristics (e.g. ethnic group);

    Migration;

    Employment;

    Workplace and journey to work.

Household Continuation Form

The Household form contained room for responses from six people, but if there were more than six people in a household then a household continuation form was issued which repeated the person questions for a further five people.

Communal Establishment Form

The communal establishment form was delivered to each communal establishment in Northern Ireland along with a supply of individual forms. It contained a total of 4 questions, all of which required tick-box answers and concerned the type of establishment owned.

Individual Form

Each usual resident living at the communal establishment was required to complete an individual form, given to them by the establishment manager, which contained the same questions as the person section of the household form. Once complete the form was returned to the manager, who then returned the complete set of forms for his/her establishment to the Census Office.

People living in households also had the option to request an individual form, if for privacy reasons they did not wish to use the household form. The individual forms were provided upon request and contained the same questions as the person section in the household form but for one person only.

Dummy Form

In the event that an enumerator encountered a dwelling that was/appeared vacant, he/she completed a dummy form which required the enumerator to provide as many details as possible about the dwelling.
