Northern Ireland Census 2001
Output Areas in Digital boundary format

 

The 2001 Census Output Area digital datasets are now available, along with other geography products, from Census Customer Services on CD. These digital datasets can be used by Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Users should note that the digital datasets provided are only digital boundaries – there is no background mapping. The Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland (OSNI) can supply vector and raster maps for background mapping of Northern Ireland.

File Formats 

The Output Area digital boundary datasets are available as Shapefiles or in Mapinfo format. 

Shapefiles is the file format used by ESRI ArcView software but they can be read by most GIS packages. Look in the Help section of your GIS software to find information on how to import them.

ESRI, the makers of ArcView, supply a free viewing package ArcExplorer which will  allow these datasets to be viewed.  To download ArcExplorer from ESRI CLICK HERE.  

Mapinfo also supply a free viewing package, MapInfo Proviewer, which will allow Mapinfo versions of the datasets to be viewed.   To download Mapinfo Proviewer from Mapinfo CLICK HERE.  

 

Census Geography Products on CD

The Census Geography CD is FREE, however, users will need to :-

print the request form (Click HERE for a PDF version of the form)
   
print the Conditions of Supply (Click HERE for a PDF version)
   
complete BOTH forms and post to Census customer services (Click HERE for address)
